Mid-May and Feeling Like Summer

A beautiful morning is under way - nice and cool to start the morning (upper 40's), but close to 80 today is the expected high.  It's a little dry around here, we may be doing some watering in the garden.  What a wonderful garden it is when you consider it is only mid-May.  I'm very thankful for a couple days off work and hopefully an excuse to stay home and spend a lot of time in the garden (other than the Farmers Market tomorrow that is!).  After catching up on a few emails this morning and a candle order, I can't wait to get out in the garden.  I have lots of weeding to do, a little tilling, and hope to get a few more rows of sweet corn and some cucumber hills going.  The "portable" greenhouse has been taken down for the season since warm weather is more than here to stay.
Yesterday morning was spent weed-eating.  About ten years ago we planted quite a few tree seedlings (Ash, Walnut, Oak, Pine, and Tulip varieties). They are growing into beautiful trees at this point, but every few weeks it is time to go thru and trim around the bottoms of all of them.  It can be a little time-consuming going through row after row of them, but with the dogs walking behind me keeping me company, it makes the time go fast.  It sure looks nice when everything is finished.
This week will also be the time to do a little shuffling on chicken pens.  Our 45-50 new layers are a couple months old and doing well.  We are having a hard time keeping up with egg orders now and are very anxious for the young "girls" to start laying.  Yes, I know we still have a couple more months to wait....but one can hope they start early.  It is fun watching them scratch around out in the morning sun and enjoying all the garden scraps (weeds) that get sent their way this time of year.  We have about another dozen and a half meat chickens to butcher and put in the freezer and then they will be finished until fall (when the weather cools back off and the bugs are down).  We prefer to raise meat chickens in the spring and fall only.  This bunch from Hoover Hatchery has been an exceptionally healthy bunch.  No leg problems and very strong and vibrant - (oh, and did I mention delicious too!  I baked our first one this weekend).  Many thanks to my husband for all of his butchering help.  We have quite the smooth system on butchering day, each with our own duties and we just plug right along on the task.
We hope many of you are experiencing the gorgeous weather this week that we are here in central IN, and have time to get out and enjoy it!
