While we all take a moment today to reflect on Memorial Day and the meaning it holds for each of us, I hope you are all able to spend a bit of time with family and friends today and enjoy some of the great outdoors. Although here in west central IN, it is going to be another mighty hot day. I'm not sure what's going on with Mother Nature these days, but we're not even out of May yet and have had a handful of 90+ days already (today being another). Rain has been mighty hard to come by, but we have a slight chance tonight. Farmers are already putting out signs "Pray for Rain". I hope this isn't a sign of the summer ahead. We are fortunate that are garden areas are manageable with sprinklers, so we've been watering a lot. Some more vegetables are coming on now and I will be heading out shortly to pick/shell peas this morning. We've been picking a lot of radishes, but I think the early season lettuce/spinach/radishes will have to be about done (with this heat), they don't do well in hot/dry weather and I've noticed the radishes are getting a little spicy. The kohlrabi is coming on well, We don't get to enjoy that treat often, but I'm sure glad to see it come in season whether to eat sliced and fresh or to cook up on the grill. We are still getting asparagus, a little rhubarb, and are enjoying the peas coming on well now. Most of the peas just get shelled and put in bags in the freezer for later use, although a few fresh crisp ones are great to enjoy in a salad or just to pop in your mouth while picking.
We were able to get the last of the spring meat chickens butchered and put in the freezer last weekend. Glad with the heat this past week that we had them done. Meat chickens struggle in weather extremes.
We've got 4 Farmers Markets under our belt, and we're getting pretty smooth with the set-up and tear down. We've met a lot of wonderful people, both vendors and patrons. It's neat to see someone come seek your booth out for a specific product/purchase. I make a crotchet-top towel (with a button) that will hook on to drawer/stove handles. I learned how to make them out of necessity. I use them daily and my old ones had worn out - so I studied how they were made and gave it a try myself. I must have done okay. I have been a towel making crazy lady of late, and I've been regularly selling out of all but a few each week. I'm glad people are enjoying being able to find them at our booth.
Time to get headed out to do some watering and picking. Wishing all of you a wonderful Memorial Day. To those of you past/present Service men/women, we are all in debt to you for your sacrifice and service. We would not be here to enjoy the freedoms this great nation enjoys without your dedication!
